Day Four


From the Marlin waking Santiago by jerking the line to Santiago's return to the shack.

Using the book, write a think piece (exactly what it says; what do you think?) of five or more paragraphs about the following ideas:

• What does Santiago mean when he says "To suffer like a man."?
• Santiago views the struggle as  between himself and a worthy opponent, the marlin. Why does he not care who kills who(what will others say of him if he kills the fish)?
• What new life will Santiago have in the view of others?
• Why can't Santiago look at the mutilated marlin?
• How does Santiago justify killing him?
  

Day Five     
From Manolin's bringing the old man coffee to the old man's return to sleep and dream of lions.    


Do the same as above.

• In the final pages, the author lets the reader know that this is not a tale of defeat but one of redemption.  How is this true?                                                                              
• How does he further extend the images that link Santiago to Christ?
